Story: Deer and deer farming

The first attempt to establish moose in New Zealand, in the Hokitika valley in August 1900, failed, The second attempt was made in 1907, when four bulls and six cows imported from Canada were released in Dusky Sound. The first wapiti and moose hunting season was in 1923, with a limit of one animal per moose licence. On 9 September 1929 the first moose, a ten-pointer, was shot by E. J. Herrick.
