The entrance to a beehive is populated by worker bees, which are non-reproducing female bees. Some are young guard bees, who check each new arrival to ensure that they are a member of the hive. Others are largely older worker bees returning to the hive to inform others where the best flowers are located, and to deposit the nectar and pollen they have collected.
