Story: Coarse fish



Introduced to New Zealand in the 1860s, goldfish are widespread and well established in the North Island. They have since spread to the South Island. Wild populations lack the larger fins, protruding eyes and colouration of aquarium specimens. In captivity these characteristics are only retained by selective breeding, and wild populations soon take on an olive-bronze to deep gold colour.
