In 1905 the common North American white-tailed deer was successfully introduced to Stewart Island and at the head of Lake Wakatipu. In the 1990s the Wakatipu herd ranged over 350 square kilometres, while on Stewart Island they covered 1,650 square kilometres. The creation of a national park covering much of Stewart Island in 2002 sat uneasily with many hunters, who feared that deer would be more closely controlled.
