Guides Maggie and Bella

Mākereti Papakura (‘Guide Maggie’, at right) and her half-sister Bella were among the most prominent guides in the Whakarewarewa thermal area in the early 20th century. This photograph is reproduced on a tin plate. Scenes from around New Zealand on the rim of the plate are separated by portraits of Māori men and women.
