In the 1940s and 1950s, huge floods swamped the Manawatū plains when heavy rain swelled tributary rivers. The Moutoa floodgates, near Foxton, were completed in 1962 to control flooding on the Manawatū River. This major engineering project is one of New Zealand’s most effective flood control structures.
