River flowing through bush

River flowing through bush

This section of the Eastern Hutt River, north of Upper Hutt, flows through dense bush. This was the environment for many New Zealand rivers before large areas were converted to farmland. The overhanging plants and trees were home to birds and insects, and provided shade and food for fish and other river life.
