
These men are standing in the National Art Gallery with entries in the 1957 Kelliher Art Competition. The competition had been set up the previous year ‘to encourage artists to paint the essential character of the New Zealand scene’. It emphasised realistic portrayals of the landscape, and was popular with the public.
