Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) is surrounded by a national park – the area of dark green native forest – but the lowlands surrounding it have been converted to pasture. Most of New Zealand’s lowland forest – an important beetle habitat – has been turned into farmland. Because beetles are small and inconspicuous, it is likely that some native species never known to science have become extinct as a result of deforestation.
