Hazards of fieldwork

Soil surveying often involved heading into rugged terrain, where roads were poor. Soil scientist John McCraw is in the car, while Bruce Miller investigates a makeshift bridge. They were in the Makarora valley, on the way to the Haast Pass in 1949.
