Story: Wellington places

Whalers’ wall

Whalers’ wall

Three islets lie off the eastern side of Kāpiti Island. Ngāti Toa chiefs were keen to live on them because they provided greater security and were close to the anchorages of visiting ships. For a time the chief Te Rauparaha lived on Tāhoramaurea. When he left the island it was occupied by whalers, who built several stone houses on its north-western side. This is a surviving wall from one of the houses.
