Kura Tawhiti (Castle Hill), between the Torlesse and Craigieburn ranges in the Southern Alps, was made a tōpuni in 1998, as part of the government’s Treaty of Waitangi settlement with Ngāi Tahu. The area, with its striking limestone formations, is of particular significance to the tribe. Tōpuni means ‘to cover’, and the name of this type of reserve refers to the special protection given by Ngāi Tahu.
