Workers search visitors’ bags and equipment at the quarantine facility on Whenua Hou/Codfish Island in 2005. Whenua Hou, a nature reserve, was the main habitat of the endangered flightless parrot, the kākāpō. Specially protected areas, along with nature and scientific reserves, often have access restrictions and permit systems to keep out unwanted plants and animals.
