Story: Butterflies and moths

Moth species (2nd of 2)

Moth species

These four species show the variety of the moth families found in New Zealand. The elegant plume moth, Stenoptilia charadrias, comes from the high mountains of the South Island’s main divide. Eudonia aspidota is common in shrublands throughout most of the country. A lichen-feeding species, Dichromodes ida flies around rock tors by day in Central Otago. Another diurnal species, of northern Southland and Central Otago, the beautiful Asaphodes cinnabari flies in moist tussockland and has larvae that feeds on low herbs.
