Protecting rivers

Members of conservation and recreation groups, including Sue McAllister of the Otago Canoe and Kayak Club (left), place a sign warning against drinking water from the Taieri River, in January 2005. Kayaking groups are among those concerned about threats to New Zealand’s natural rivers, including dam and irrigation schemes, pollution and invasive plants such as didymo.
