Story: Small forest birds

Kermadec red-crowned parakeet (3rd of 3)

Kermadec red-crowned parakeet

The Kermadec red-crowned parakeet, a subspecies of the New Zealand red-crowned parakeet, is endemic to the subtropical Kermadec Islands. The birds feed and nest close to the ground, so they are very vulnerable to predation by mammals. Once extinct on Raoul Island, they have recolonised the island since the eradication of cats and rats, and they have remained plentiful on uninhabited Macauley Island.
