The karst landscape of Mt Owen in north-west Nelson has an other-worldly look, and was used in The lord of the rings films. At 1,875 metres it is the highest point in Kahurangi National Park. As water flows over rocks, it slowly dissolves them. Cracks and other natural lines of weakness grow larger. Beneath Mt Owen there are many caves, including New Zealand’s longest – Bulmer Cavern, which has over 50 kilometres of explored passages.
