Egg-cup Podzol in farmland

Podzolised soils are weathered, poorly drained and acidic. The podzolised soil under mature trees, particularly kauri, can form 'egg-cup Podzols' – nutrient-poor areas where individual trees once grew. This egg-cup Podzol is located beside a farm track near Whangārei. If drained and fertilised, podzolised soils can become productive pasture.
