Story: Bush trams and other log transport

A. & G. Price geared locomotive (3rd of 3)

A. & G. Price geared locomotive

This was the ultimate geared locomotive to be designed and manufactured in New Zealand. Built by A. & G. Price at Thames in 1936, this ‘E’ type is working on the Matahina tramway, Bay of Plenty, in near-new condition. The tramway had one of the longest log hauls in New Zealand (31 kilometres), and this snappy machine provided the requisite power and speed.
