Spotting scopes or high-powered binoculars are useful for watching waders or shorebirds, especially if you want to recognise species at a distance, or record coloured leg bands on migratory birds. Researcher Adrian Riegen has worked for many years on international wader monitoring programmes. He liaises with observers at stopovers along the flyways, to track the movements of individuals or groups of birds.
