Story: Ngāti Tūwharetoa

Lake Taupō

Lake Taupō

Ngāti Tūwharetoa groups originally came from Kawerau, but established their authority over the Taupō area when they defeated Ngāti Hotu who had been living there. This painting by John Philemon Backhouse shows Lake Taupō, looking south towards Tongariro and Ngāuruhoe, in the 1880s.
