Tūwharetoa i te Aupōuri meeting house

Ngāti Tūwharetoa take their name from Tūwharetoa, a 16th-century chief, sometimes known as Tūwharetoa i te Aupōuri. A meeting house at Pūkawa, near Waihī, was carved in his honour in 1909; this photograph was taken the following year. The meeting house is no longer in existence, but the name is perpetuated in a new building at Tūrangi.
