Story: Whitebait and whitebaiting

Expensive delicacy

Expensive delicacy

Whitebait are not cheap. In the 2006 season the going rate was $12.95 per 100 grams. This equates to around two whitebait for 10 cents. In 1973, 22 whitebait could be bought for 10 cents. After accounting for inflation, the price in real terms is exactly the same – 5 cents per whitebait.
