Story: Conifer–broadleaf forests

Ancient log

Ancient log

This fallen Hall’s tōtara log, from the inland Kaikōura Range, was once part of an extensive forest that was burnt by Māori 500–700 years ago. The forest failed to regenerate, and when Europeans arrived in the region the land was covered in short tussock grass and shrubs.
