Lower Waitaki River

After passing through the Upper Waitaki power stations, water flows through to the lower reaches of the Waitaki River. A 2001 plan to divert this flow into downstream hydroelectric schemes was foiled by public opposition. Increasing demand for irrigation water may reduce future flows.
