Asylum seeker Ahmed Zaoui

Asylum seeker Ahmed Zaoui

Some people fleeing from persecution or threats to their lives enter New Zealand as asylum seekers, and request refugee status after their arrival. In a controversial case that began in 2002, the Algerian politician Ahmed Zaoui arrived as an asylum seeker but was detained as a security risk for two years although he had been granted refugee status. He is pictured here in 2004.
