The number of New Zealand residents born in Albania itself is very small. However, the community of those with Albanian ethnicity is larger, because in the late 1990s Albanian refugees from ethnic violence in Kosovo (formerly part of Yugoslavia) were admitted to New Zealand. Like other refugees, they spent time after their arrival at the Māngere refugee centre, where they learned about New Zealand and were taught English. These young people from Kosovo were photographed at Selwyn College in Auckland.
