Story: Central and South-eastern Europeans

Cabinet from Bohemia

Cabinet from Bohemia

Central Europeans brought accomplishments and skills in many fields to New Zealand in the 19th century. Anton Seuffert, born in Bohemia (which later became part of Czechoslovakia), became New Zealand’s pre-eminent cabinetmaker. Several of the beautifully inlaid pieces he made for notable clients are now held in New Zealand museums. This cabinet is at the national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa.
