Mountain horopito (Pseudowintera colorata), also known as pepper tree, stand out due to their red-coloured leaves in this view of forest on Mt Taranaki. Horopito are fast-growing and quickly colonise areas of open ground. The ones growing here are on an old slip scar. Their red leaves may be a protective measure against ultraviolet radiation.
