Weka can be found in bush, scrub and bush margins – especially near streams, wetlands and open pasture where there are diverse types of food. They flick litter aside with their bills to find invertebrates. This weka on Kāpiti Island is probably a hybrid of the North Island and western South Island subspecies – both were introduced to the island.
