This shortfin eel embryo is at the Mahurangi Technical Institute in Warkworth. In 2005, researchers there managed to breed the species from eggs and produce commercial quantities of hatchlings – a world first. Eel farming worldwide relies on capturing juveniles, known as glass eels, from the wild. New Zealand research may reveal how to farm eels from fertilised eggs through to adults.
