Story: Tāwhirimātea – the weather

Te Puna Wai Mātauranga is the whakairo (carving) at the main entrance to the University of Waikato Library. The main figure is Tāwhaki, who is grasping the vine on which he climbed to the heavens. In tradition, Tāwhaki is linked with lightning.
