This wooden ashtray decorated using pyrography (or pokerwork) was made by a disabled soldier in the 1930s. After the First World War injured and disabled soldiers were encouraged to take up craft for rehabilitation purposes. Woodwork and basketry were the main forms of rehabilitation crafts, but soldiers also sewed and embroidered.
