This 'log cabin' style quilt was made by Swiss immigrant Anna Hunger, who arrived in New Zealand in 1875. Many of the decorative fabrics on the upper side date from the 1830s – the quilt may have been partially made around then, or more likely, the fabric was recycled from old garments. The backing is made from flour and oatmeal bags, some of which have New Zealand marks. It is not the most expertly made of quilts, but would have kept generations of sleepers comfortable in bed all the same.
