In Whanganui on Jubilee Day (21 June 1887), which celebrated the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign, there was a recital of patriotic band music in the morning, and a torchlight procession at night. At 9 p.m. that evening a special jubilee ode written for the occasion was sung. The focus of attention for the crowds who had flocked to town was the industrial exhibition held in the Drill Shed. The exhibition showed off locally manufactured goods, which included such objects as wire strainers, sheep-branding equipment, beer and aerated water, violins and furniture made from New Zealand woods.
