A poem by R. A. K. Mason, 'Stoic overthrow', appears in this first volume of The Phoenix, an Auckland University student literary magazine. By the third issue, in 1933, Mason had taken over the editorship from James Bertram and the focus had shifted to politics, a reflection of Mason's own espousal of Marxist principles at this time.
