Book about the Native rugby team

Book about the Native rugby team

This is the inside cover of the first rugby tour book to appear in New Zealand. A description of the 1888–89 New Zealand Native team's international tour, it was written by the promoter, Thomas Eyton, in response to numerous public inquiries, but was not published until 1896. The book was needed partly because of the inadequate press coverage of the tour at the time. Only the Lyttelton Times had a regular correspondent in the UK. The other papers republished a scattering of accounts from different regional British papers, about seven weeks after the event.
