The variety in size and materials of these fish hooks illustrates the specialisation of work in Māori communities before the arrival of Europeans. Although there was little trade between hapū (sub-tribes), there was considerable division of labour within these groups, with people becoming expert at cultivating crops, hunting birds or fishing. The biggest division of labour was between men and women.
