If you are lucky enough to have held a $100 note, you may have noticed the South Island zebra moth (Declana egregia) in the lower left-hand corner. It is also known as a lichen moth, and a similar species is found in the North Island. The zebra moth’s larvae eat blackberry, lichen, lancewood and the five-finger plant. A similar species, the lichen moth (Declana atronivea), is found only in the North Island.
