Ngāti Toa migrations

This map shows the journey of Ngāti Toa from Waikato down to Wellington. The entire trip was known as Te Heke Mai-i-raro (the migration from the north). The first part of the journey to Taranaki was Te Heke Tahutahuahi (the fire-lighting migration). The second part, Taranaki to Wellington, was Te Heke Tātaramoa (the bramble-bush migration).
