This table shows the number of civil defence emergencies for each decade from 1970, grouped according to type of event. Floods are the most common type of event leading to an emergency in New Zealand. However, other types of natural hazard, though less frequent, can be even more devastating. The 2010 and 2011 Canterbury and 2016 Kaikōura earthquakes are prime examples.
