The map shows the location of the major engagements undertaken by the New Zealanders fighting on the Western Front during the last three years of the First World War. The table below the map indicates the cost of each of these events both in numbers of wounded and of dead. The level of casualties in the second half of 1917 is clear and helps to explain why this period was among the most miserable of the entire war.
