Franz Visscher’s chart of the discoveries made by Abel Tasman during his 1642–43 and 1644 voyages through the south-west Pacific records the first place names given in New Zealand by Europeans. The name New Zealand – Nova Zeelandia in Latin – displaced ‘Staten Landt’ once it was realised that Staten Landt at the bottom of South America was an island.
