This map shows the areas where the southern saltmarsh mosquito (Aedes camptorhynchus) has been found as at February 2005, and where it has been found and thought to be eradicated. In its native Australia, this species can spread viruses. The first New Zealand reports were in 1998, when people living near swampland close to Napier complained of its vicious biting. The eradication campaign involves mostly ground and air spraying. Two sprays are used: one kills mosquito larvae, and the other prevents larvae from developing into normal pupae (and consequently adults).
