Tāneatua was a tohunga on the Mataatua canoe. He explored inland from the place named after him, Tāneatua. This map shows his journeys – first to the source of the Ōwhakatoro stream. He then followed the Whakatāne river southwards and turned northwards to climb Maungapōhatu before returning home. Finally, he went along the Waimana and Te Waiiti rivers.
