The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was founded in 1864 and introduced fish and animals to Canterbury to provide sport for fishermen and hunters. Some species became pests, damaging native vegetation and displacing indigenous species. Other animals were introduced by accident or ‘invaded’ from other regions. This table lists species introduced to Canterbury before and after 1860.
