Roll the cursor over the albatross beside each island or group of islands to see the species breeding there, listed from most abundant to least abundant. Campbell Island has the greatest number of species – six – and is a major world centre of albatross diversity. The Campbell mollymawk (Thalassarche impavida) breeds nowhere else, and the southern royal albatross (Diomedea epomophora), endemic to New Zealand waters, only breeds at Campbell and Auckland islands. The Auckland wandering (Gibson’s) albatross (Diomedea antipodensis gibsoni) breeds only on the Auckland Islands, particularly on Adams Island. The Antipodes Islands also have a unique species of wandering albatross, the Antipodean albatross (Diomedea antipodensis), which only breeds there (apart from a tiny number at Campbell Island).
