Story: Manufacturing – an overview

Manufacturing, 1867

In 1867 manufacturing was spread through New Zealand’s provinces. Auckland remained the dominant industrial area, with the most manufacturing firms (101), the most employees (1,041), the most horsepower used (1,165 – around 870 kilowatts), and the most capital invested (£246,400 – over $28 million in 2020 terms). Auckland would shortly be overtaken by Dunedin, its manufacturing lifted by the gold rush.
