Refrigeration made possible a thriving dairy industry which spread in the wetter parts of the North Island, especially Northland, Waikato and Taranaki. Dairy factories sprang up to process the milk into butter and cheese. Factories in Taranaki were made redundant by one very large factory near Hāwera, but the old buildings remained.
