Island sanctuaries

Islands are ideal for saving endangered species. Once pests such as possums, stoats and rats have been eradicated, the natural sea barrier prevents new arrivals. The Department of Conservation has an interest in more than 200 islands. The major islands used for protecting species are shown here.
